Your digital footprint isn't what you posted. It's what's findable — which includes things you forgot, things other people published, and things that are simply out of date. Twenty minutes of honest auditing will surface more career-relevant problems than a month of resume tweaking.
Step 1: The name search (5 minutes)
Incognito window. Search these four, screenshotting page one of each:
- Your full name
- Your name + your city
- Your name + your industry or title
- Your name + your current employer
Note three things for each: what ranks, what's missing, and what's actively wrong. That's your baseline.
Step 2: The image search (2 minutes)
Search your name under Images. This is what appears next to you in a stranger's mind. If the top result is a blurry photo from a 2015 conference, or someone else entirely, you've found a fixable problem. A consistent, professional headshot used across every platform is how you control this — same photo everywhere is a small act with an outsized effect on recognition.
Step 3: The platform sweep (8 minutes)
Check every platform where a version of you exists. For each, ask one question: if a decision-maker saw only this, what would they conclude?
- LinkedIn: current role accurate? Headline claiming value or describing a title? About written this decade?
- Old company bios: still live on a previous employer's site with an outdated title? These rank surprisingly well and quietly age you.
- Association / directory listings: often auto-generated and half-wrong. Claim and correct them.
- Personal social: not about scrubbing your personality — about knowing what's public. Set what's personal to private and let the professional surface do the talking.
- Dormant profiles: that abandoned About.me from 2013 ranking above your LinkedIn? Delete or update. A dead profile is worse than no profile.
Step 4: The gap list (5 minutes)
Now write down what a stranger cannot currently find:
- What you actually deliver, in one clear sentence
- Proof of your biggest wins, with numbers
- Anyone else vouching for you
- A way to contact you that isn't a platform's messaging system
- Anything that distinguishes you from someone with the same title
That list is your entire visibility problem, itemized. Most professionals discover the same thing when they do this honestly: nothing they'd choose to be judged on is findable, and everything findable was chosen by someone else.
The fix, in order of leverage
- Build the asset you control. One page with your name, your story, and your proof. It fixes the gap list in a single move and gives every other asset something to point at.
- Align the platforms. Same name, same photo, same positioning line, everywhere.
- Correct or kill the stale. Update what you can, delete what you can't.
- Add proof. Recommendations, results, third-party mentions.
Twenty minutes to see it clearly. A few days to fix it. And then, for the rest of your career, the version of you that strangers meet first is the one you wrote.
